What do theology and the ministry of mercy have to do with one another? Everything! The Lord says he will have mercy on whom he will have mercy, and he calls the recipients of his mercy to be merciful as he is merciful. Salvation that is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ always leads to believers doing the good works that have been prepared for them to do. The reformation in Switzerland was birthed in the throes of suffering. When the bubonic plague broke out in 1519, Ulrich Zwingli won the hearts of Zurich’s citizens as he remained in the city to care for victims and nearly died himself while other religious and civic leaders fled. His preaching combined with active faith ushered in the reformation. Reformation of the church according to God’s word in our own day will also be marked by the ministry of mercy. Our conference speakers, Dr. Philip Ryken and Dr. David Apple, served together at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia for many years. They have sought to both teach and live the theology and practice of mercy. We are delighted to welcome them to the Reformation Society’s fall conference where they will together call us as God’s people to live out the theology of grace and mercy we love so dearly.
