Late in David's kingship, he was incited by the Lord to number his people thus provoking God to wrath. The sinfulness of the military census rested in David's motives which were to take confidence in a vast army rather than in the fear of the Lord. God sent Gad to rebuke David for his sin and to offer him three different options of punishment. David chose pestilence from the hand of the Lord as the punishment for his sin and the people of God were made to suffer mightily for David's sin. With the angel of pestilence closing in on Jerusalem with sword drawn, David cried out to God for deliverance and the Lord provided for an altar to be erected on Araunah's threshing floor to appease his wrath. Out of the midst of David's sin and Israel's rebellion, God graciously shed forth rays of gospel light as he provided an altar for appeasement for David's sin as well as consecrating Araunah's threshing floor as the permanent location for the temple, sacrifice, and the dwelling place of the Lord.
