A generation after the first exiles returned from Babylon they had begun to lose heart. It is precisely that situation of the people of God being dispirited, apathetic, and hopeless in their work that Psalm 126 addresses. Beginning with the prayer for return and restoration from exile in v4a to the bold declaration of the promise of fruitfulness in kingdom labor in verse 5b and 6b, we can see that this Psalm seeks to motivate the people of God. The purpose of Psalm 126 is to call for spiritual renewal and to cast a vision of hope before the church to motivate it to persist in kingdom labor.
