One thing people throughout all civilizations share is a vision of the good life. Lyricists, poets, philosophers, and advertisers provide portals of access into how various cultures conceive of its core elements. Psalm 128 casts a vision of the blessed life which identifies its main parts, some even which overlap with how others would define and understand it. The key difference between how this psalms speaks of the good life and how unbelievers think of it is its source and path: the fear of the Lord and walking in His ways. Like a bracket around the exposition of the core elements of the blessed life in verses 2-3, verses 1 and 4 make it clear that the fear of the Lord is the path for obtaining the blessed life. This message expounds upon the constituent elements of the blessed life and concludes with concrete application about the kind of obedience which manifests the fear of the Lord and secures divine blessing.
