This short, prohibitive commandment comprehends a world of positive duty. It requires that God alone be our chief end; that, with the whole man, we believe in, love, fear, worship, serve, trust and obey Him alone without reservations or qualifications. We are called to "have" God in the deepest sense - pursuing, embracing and conforming to Him in faith. The object of this command is the Triune God, the Second Person of which provided the only example of perfect conformity to this and every commandment.
The high demands of this commandment should pierce our hearts with conviction, send us to Christ for forgiveness, and engender a gracious resolve within us to have only the true God always before us. |
