Jesus is pre-figured in the Old Testament by Melchizedek, the King of Salem—King of Peace. Isaiah proclaims Jesus to be the Prince of Peace. When He was born the angels praised Him “. . . on earth peace to men . . . .” When He came to his disciples following His resurrection He greeted them, “Peace to you.” So it appears strange to read that Jesus said that He had come to bring a sword—a symbol of war. To resolve this dilemma, consider the objects of His peace and the objects of His sword. He brings peace to those on whom His favor rests. They are those who love and honor Him and serve Him as their Lord. But the rest will fall under His sword to destruction. You see, God is not politically correct. He is right as our Creator and remains in full authority over the universe. In the end, His glory will win out. That has been decided! The important question for you is where you will be when He overthrows all His enemies. If you are trusting in Jesus Christ to deliver you from the consequences of your sin, you will be with Him. But if not, you will face the business end of His sword. Now you have the opportunity to call on Him for mercy so that you will enjoy Him forever.
