As David went to his deathbed, the Spirit of God overcame him and put a prophecy upon his lips. These last words of David not only expressed his hope as he lay upon his deathbed, they also contained the prophecy of a coming king who would rule the world in righteousness and in the fear of the Lord. This coming ruler would mediate blessing upon his people and exercise judgment toward the godless. In view of the New Testament, it is quite clear that this great king is none other than Jesus Christ. Paul proclaims to the Ephesians (1:20-22) that Christ has been seated at the right hand of God far above all rule and authority and reigns there for the advantage welfare of the Church. Seated in this place of authority, he must reign until he brings all his enemies under his feet, death being the last enemy (1 Corinthians 15:25-26). Having set for this prophecy of hope centered in Christ before the Church, David rested in peace. This message concludes with a series of applications about the required response to this proclamation of Christ's kingship.
