When Christ announced at the last Passover meal that one of the disciples would betray Him, it was not readily obvious that it would be Judas. The betrayal by Judas was a fulfillment of Messianic prophecy from Psalm 45, and was necessary for the completion of the Lord's work of salvation. Judas lifted up his heel against Jesus to show disrespect, judgment, hatred and hostility for the Messiah as revealed in Christ. Ultimately this rejection would be for the belief of the rest of the followers of the Lord as they see and understand the unfolding of prophecy. This should lead all of His people to test their own belief and faith in Jesus Christ. The Church of Christ has always been a mixed community in constant need of renewal and purification made of sinners continuing to seek sanctification, and within this community reside wheat and tares, goats and sheep. Those that do not believe will eventually be separated in judgment and some will separate themselves as did Judas. All within the Lord's church are called to self examination, and this self examination should cause the true disciples to flee to Christ for the remedy of their sins.
