The Greco-Roman culture was notorious for its gross sexual immorality, condoning almost any kind of sexual conduct that did not involve one man committing adultery with another free citizen's wife. Speaking into this culture of sexual permissiveness and vulgarity, Paul called the Ephesians to a standard of sexual conduct that would make them stand out in and against their culture. In the afterglow of the post 1960′s sexual revolution, it is absolutely essential for Christians to uphold the Biblical sexual ethic in a culture that is rejecting Biblical standards and is increasingly slouching back towards the standards of the pagan ancient world. Beyond that, Christians and churches need to testify to culture and the magistrate, from the Bible, about what sexual standards the Lord requires of humans, and reject the position of many leading 21st century Reformed theologians who advocate a natural law approach to sexual ethics when speaking to the culture.
