The "good life" has been defined in many different ways in the history of human thought. Some consider it to be a life of robust intellectual activity, others imagine it is striking a balance in all things intellectual, moral, and material, while still others view it as absence of pain and experience of maximal pleasure. The thread which holds these various perspectives together is that they represent outcomes which are in man's capacity to lay hold of with his bare hands; but, the Psalmist sees the good life quite differently, as something that comes from having God as our help and hope. In this psalm the people of God are warned against trusting in what man can do for himself and are exhorted to look to the Lord who reigns over all for blessing and all goodness.
