The reign of King Joash in Judah is in two parts that are separated by the death of his Uncle Jehoiada, the High Priest. Jehoiada had been Joash' counselor in doing good. But after his death other leaders persuaded the king to turn from the Lord. The Levites were influential during the first part of the reign by teaching the law of the Lord throughout the land. The Chronicler is showing the returned exiles their need to remain faithful to the law of the Lord through faithful teachers. Thus, he also shows us the need for us to seek faithful teachers so that we may enjoy the blessing of quietness in the land.
