We learn about other people by watching what they do and listening to what they say. We learn about God in the same way, by observing his works and hearing his words. Through the cosmos which he made, by human consciousness and conscience, and in his direction of history, God reveals that he is good, wise, and powerful. Those things that exhibit chaos and bring harm reveal God's wrath against wickedness. Only God's words, given to the Church in various ways and at different times, reveal God's way of salvation to sinners. To protect his Word from the corruption of forgetfulness and the malice of deceit, God had his Word committed to writing, and since his Son Jesus Christ is God's final word to us, his former verbal means of revelation to his Church have now ceased. The Scriptures remain as God's Word to his Church.
