It is surprising to hear Paul report about his boasting when boasting has such negative connotations in our common social conventions. Generally, boasting is perceived as irritating and unseemly; yet, Paul's example of boasting suggests to us that not all boasting is bad. As Paul defends the quality of his ministry, he points to the moral and spiritual qualities which characterize it and the grace which energizes it, as he boasts in the work God is doing in his life and ministry. Given certain qualifications, it seems Paul commends boasting to Christians so long as it is a boasting in the gracious work of God in our lives and not in ourselves.
