Jesus' mention of the "abomination of desolation" in this part of the Olivet discourse would have struck fear in the minds of the Jews of His day. They thought that this had already passed forever in the 160's BC when Antiochus Epiphanes tyrannized over the Jews and offered a pig to Zeus in the Lord's Temple. And now Jesus spoke of this as coming back and happening again.
Jesus' reference to the "abomination of desolation" was in regard to the Romans besieging Jerusalem and finally destroying it in 70 AD. And just as Antiochus' terrible dealings were a foretaste of the Roman siege, we need to be warned that we have not yet seen the worst to come.
We need to watch out and not be deceived. We need to be on our guard against people who claim that Jesus has returned and the Resurrection is over. We need to not be fooled by false Christs who are lying charletans. And we need to not be deceived by signs and wonders. We must keep our eyes fixed on the Jesus of Scripture so that we don't become the prey of these predators.
