Chance and trouble happen to believer and unbeliever alike (Eccl 9:11-12). How, then, does God treat those whom he has justified? First, he continues to forgive our sins through the intercession of Christ our Priest. Therefore, those whom God has justified can never be eternally lost (Jo 10:28). Second, God treats us like a father treats his children, so when we stray we incur his fatherly displeasure. That displeasure may bring outward correction or inward awareness of losing the light of God's countenance upon us. God's sons respond to his correction by humbling themselves, confessing their sin, begging God's pardon, and renewing their faith and repentance. Because God justified the Old Testament saints in the same way as the New Testament saints, we can learn how to respond to God's fatherly displeasure from their example.
