SERMON INFO
Gays want marriage. How come? They want it not just to gain social acceptance of their sexual relationships, but also because marriage in recent decades has become an institution of low commitment easy to dissolve and with children as merely an option and an institution of high value gaining health and government benefits. Marriage is on its way to being no more than legally recognized friendship with presumed sexual rights. So why restrict it only to a man and a woman? There are three reasons. First, society needs children, children need fathers and mothers, and children only come from male and female. It’s basic biology. To note that some marriages are unable to have children misses the point. Only male and female can have children. Gay “marriages” -- friendships really -- are guaranteed sterile. Second, in marriage there is the basis of all social relationships; it unites the two kinds of people, male and female. Marriage unites the diversity of male and female in mutual help. Gay “marriage” is a flight from diversity. Third, God intends marriage to picture the relationship of Christ and his Church. Gay “marriage’ cannot do that. If our society decides to call gay friendships “marriage,” it will impoverish the institution for everyone, emptying it of its spiritual significance, of its social significance that men and women need each other, and of its biological significance for the bearing and raising of children.
