Idea: God is a God of mercy. He will not reject you if you go to Him and ask His forgiveness. He is ready and willing. Seek Him today, and find mercy and reconciliation.
Intro: Last week, from 53:1-6 we considered that God is a God of vengeance. The Lord has ordained Christ to be judge and to bring about God's holy vengeance, or the treading down of all God's enemies like a man treading down grapes in a winepress. It's a somber and marvelous theme! We were moved to glorify God for His justice, and we were moved to ask God for mercy, for we, too, have sinned. Where last week's passage revealed God as a God of vengeance, this week's passage reveals God as a God of mercy.
Isaiah's prayer suggests these tools to use when God convicts us of sin.
1. Remember God's mercy in history by reading about it in the Bible and recounting it in your prayers.
2. Remember God's mercy to you personally, also recounting it in prayer and thanking Him for it.
3. Confess your sin to the Lord, admitting your stiff necked rebellion and repenting of it.
4. Then finally, remember that God remembers. Remember that God remembers His mercy to you in Christ, His promise to dwell with you in the person of the Holy Spirit. Remember His mercy by turning to recite His promises to be a God of mercy to you. May God make His face shine on you in mercy, through the love and redemption of Christ.
