God has always expected us to be people who worship Him through a mediator. He called Israel in Exodus 19 a holy nation and designated the church in the new covenant by the same title. One feature of the Levitical priesthood is that when the priest sinned he brought guilt on the nation. That is not said of any other person including the king. The priests have a duty to preserve the nation. So in Christ, we are a priesthood to preserve the nation maintaining Godly worship, bringing the atonement of Christ to the world and being priests who act as leaven in the society.
