No one can hide from God when He comes in judgment. We are taught to repent of our pride and any false sense of security, and to flee to Jesus Christ, who is the only one who can save us from God's wrath.
1. Five 'hiding places' where men seek refuge. First, superstition. Second, wealth. Third, military strength. Fourth, idols. Fifth, men.
2. The Day of the Lord. Isaiah refers first to God's coming judgment on Jerusalem. But there remains a coming Day of the Lord hidden behind the day that fell on Jerusalem. God also warns of the Second Comming of the Lord Jesus Christ, when he will once more shake heaven and earth (Hebrews 12:25-29).
Four conclusions regarding the day of the Lord. First, “Those that will not fear God and flee to him will be forced to fear him and flee from him to a refuge of lies.” (Matthew Henry. Second, those hiding places will be shown for what they are, a refuge of lies, a flimsy cover. Third, God will humble the proud. Fourth, your last defense, your own self, will not prove to be a hiding place from God.
Conclusion: No one can hide from God when he comes in judgment. Therefore, if you are not in Christ, be warned of the coming day of the Lord. Forsake any and every hiding place, and find your refuge in Christ alone. |
