God's eternal decree is neither cold determinism nor an esoteric doctrine. God's eternal decree is the unfolding of His love toward the Son and His people throughout history. God from all eternity by the counsel of His own will has freely ordained whatsoever has or will come to pass. In thinking of this doctrine it is wise to remember that the eternal decrees are for God's own glory. Even though God's plan includes all things, God is neither the author of sin nor does he subvert the freewill of man. It is God's decree which determines the course of history; it is never history which determines the decree. His decrees toward man include those predestined to life and those foreordained to death. The mystery is not so much that the Lord chooses some over another, but it is rather that God chooses any to be saved. This doctrine is a rich place to find comfort and security for life and faith.
