God tells husbands to love their wives. How much? The way Christ loved the church and gave himself for her. For her, he gave up the glories of heaven, endured exhaustion, and died. He did it for us when we were ugly with sin, full of death, and his enemies. How much? Husbands should love their wives the way they love their own bodies, since a man and his wife become one flesh in marriage. Just as a man cherishes and cares for himself, so he should cherish and care for his wife, since in doing so he cares for himself. The marriage relationship, not the biological one of parents and children, is the closest of all human relationships. For it, a man will leave his father and mother. All of this pictures Christ and the Church and was meant to do so by God from the beginning. But that truth can’t be allowed to obscure God’s Word to wives and husbands: let the man love his wife as himself, and let the wife make sure that she respects her man.
