Both human pride and human limitations make it hard for us to think about God. The frequent result is idolatry: imagining that God is something in his Creation that we know. But God says that he is not part of the cosmos. Even the sun is only his creature and our servant. God himself is unlimited by his Creation, unlimited by space, time, or natural causation, so the immensity of the cosmos is nothing to him. Since he is not part of his Creation, we cannot picture him. Idolatry always cuts God down to size and is false. Nevertheless, God designed the world to reveal his glory, his wisdom, his justice, and his power. Fathers who love their children, chastise them, and give them good gifts indicate something of God's good nature. Finally, the one God is a Trinity of Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. He is love from before the foundation of the world. |
