As Stephen begins to respond to the charges brought against him, he begins with a peculiar title for the Lord, God of glory. The false witnesses rising up against Stephen said that he was preaching against the temple, but what he was preaching is that God was not confined to a building and that through Jesus a new way of approach to God had been opened. This title, God of glory, was used in the OT in connection with the Lord drawing near to his people and that is how Stephen uses the title here. By saying that the God of glory appeared to Abraham in Mesopotamia, he was making the very important point that the Lord is not confined to earthly buildings; therefore the removal of the temple did not cut off access to God since now through Christ the believer can by faith draw near unto God in the true and heavenly Holy of Holies.
