Paul introduces Romans chapter 4, dealing with the outward and inward problem of man through the covenant. God's given righteousness is designed to be received by faith. Faith requires a circumcised heart. God meets the requirement of the law and its demands with the death of His Son. Having been upheld, this law excludes man's boasting. Living by the law means living by the principle order that God has designed, relying only on Christ's cross work. Faith in its acting is not what God counts as righteousness. Faith was imputed to Abraham. It is Christ's righteousness, and faith is the open hand that can do nothing but receive the righteousness given by God. Any attempt to include human effort as meriting righteousness before, during, and after justification is heresy. The believer is perfectly righteousness now in Christ and cannot add one iota to it by living. The life and evidence of covenant-keeping is that which faith expresses and it will not add to your favor before God.
