As Paul, in verse 17, develops the implications of spiritual conversion to the Lord and its accompanying action of veil removal set fort in verse 16, he expounds the meaning and implications of these actions. In verse 17a Paul expounds upon verse 16a identifying the Lord to whom we turn in conversion as the Lord who is the Spirit and in verse 17b he expounds upon the meaning of veil removal by placing it under the broader category of Spirit generated liberty. This concept of Spirit generated liberty is unfolded in the first two clauses in verse 18, "unveiled face" and "beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord." These two initial clauses in verse 18 provide the necessary and essential conditions for the deeper implication of spiritual conversion to the Lord which is progressive sanctification. This great new covenant benefit of progressive sanctification is summarized by Paul as including ongoing and increasing spiritual renewal after the pattern of Christ's glorious image by the power of the Holy Spirit.
