Idea: Isaiah warns against the sin of unbelief that turns away from Jesus as the only Redeemer.
Intro: This Song of the Suffering Servant goes on to give further detail as to Christ's suffering, identifying unbelief as a grave sin against Jesus. "Who has believed our report and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" The New Testament writers quote these words to point out the sin of rejecting Jesus, the sin of unbelief. They put it in the very same context that Isaiah does. The appearance of Jesus was according to promise and accompanied with signs, but the Jews of Jesus' day hardened themselves to the signs Jesus did and to the warnings he gave, thus falling under God's judgment. Isaiah warned the people in his own day of the sin of turning away from the Messiah because of his unexpected path of suffering. They needed to know and trust in the promised Messiah, giving them hope under trial. Jesus and the apostles warned the people in their day of the sin of turning away from Jesus because Jesus wasn't like the champion they expected or wanted. So, too, we are warned today of turning away from Jesus because His path and purpose lead us to be involved suffering and sacrifice.
