A common vestige of faith in America is a faith in Providence. People will say, “It was meant to be.” Even Benjamin Franklin at the Constitutional Convention remembered God's Providence: “I have lived Sirs a long time, and the longer I live the more convincing proofs I see of this truth -- that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?” God's Providence extends to all things and encompasses blessing and judgment, yet in such a way that secondary causes are established and God himself is never the author of evil. By God's Providence his grace may leave a saint for a time in order to chastise and humble us. Nevertheless, God's People are the special object of his love and care so that everything works together for good to those who love him and are called according to his purpose.
