Idea: God reveals His honor in His wrath. Intro: This passage makes us uneasy. It directs our attention to mounds of dead bodies, the reeking smell of blood, and the stench of smoke. We understandably find this repulsive. And yet, as Calvin says, “in these things the honor of God [shines] brightly.” Let us draw near, as God commands. Let us hear what the Lord Almighty has to say. And let us fear the Lord our God, worshipping Him through Jesus, the Lamb of God who fully satisfied the wrath of God.
Vs. 8 summarize the warning, “For it is the day of the Lord's vengeance, The year of recompense for the cause of Zion.” It expresses the main idea of this passage, that God reveals His honor in His wrath.
