A peculiar incident, at least by contemporary standards, shaving the beards of David's diplomats, led to one of the most significant military conflicts of David's kingship. Hanun, the Ammonite king, treated David's counselors not only with indignity but also, he attempted to infiltrate Israel with the lordship of Chemosh as he sent these diplomats back to Israel with shaved beards and sliced up robes. Not only did this action signal war between Israel and Ammon, it was an attack on the Law of God which was the constitution of Israel. Joab, as he prepared his men for battle, motivated his troops for vigorous military action as he admonished his warriors that as they went out to battle against Ammon, they were fighting to defend nothing less than the covenant people and the very Kingdom of God. This message explores the significance of Ammon's hostile actions and applies the theology of Joab's pre-battle speech for the edification of the saints.
