The covenant of works entailed not simply the one commandment to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, but it included obedience to the entire moral law which was writ upon the heart of Adam in the creation. The disobedience of Adam in keeping the covenant of works brought sin into the world for Adam and all of his natural descendants. This inherited sin nature includes both the original sin of Adam and the actual sin committed by Adam's children. Actual sin includes the dual aspects of lack of conformity and transgression; it can also be expressed as failure to obey the commands and actual breaking of the commands of God. In each of God's commands there is implicitly something forbidden and something required and both forms of actual sin are equally abhorrent to a holy and righteous Lord.
