Where do you more expect fair treatment, from the church or from a civil court? Bitter experience teaches that sometimes that answer is the civil court. Luke records a contrast between Roman and Jewish justice; the advantage lies with Roman justice. The Roman commander called the Sanhedrin to state their charge against Paul. It would have been easy in Jerusalem just to punish Paul, but Roman law protected Paul, and he was allowed to face his accusers and answer them. Paul replied, calling God as his witness, that he was innocent. The high priest responded by having him struck, contrary to the Law as Paul immediately pointed out, and he prophesied that God would strike the high priest. The he stated the essential matter at issue, the Resurrection. At that the Pharisees in the Sanhedrin took up his part, the Sadducees cried for his blood, and the Romans had to rescue Paul again and take him to the barracks. A faction of the Sanhedrin then became party to an assassination plot, but Jesus stood by Paul that night and commended him for testifying of him in Jerusalem. He would testify next in Rome.
