As Paul was travelling to Damascus with a pocket full of arrest warrants in order to apprehend and arrest Christians, he was encountered at midday by the risen Christ. When Jesus met this blasphemer and insolent man, he brought him under conviction of sin and struck him with blindness as a sign of covenant curse on account of his transgressing the Law of God. In that moment Paul learned that all his "righteousness" was to be counted as "loss" in order that he might have a righteousness which was from God on account of faith. For good reason, this profound spiritual change wrought in the heart of Saul is iconic for spiritual conversion as it put on display the wondrous power of God at work in the salvation of the sinner.
