Following upon the heels of discussing the subjective dimensions of church unity, Paul now unfolds 7 objective marks of church unity. Commonly, these marks are viewed by Protestants as marks of the unity of the invisible church; however, the list of marks proceeds from what could be understood as invisible marks, but moves toward what can only be viewed as visible marks. This passage then, and what follows, vv7ff, have the visible church in view and provide rich instruction for the Church about how to conceive of and promote unity in the visible church.
