The temples of heathen gods are houses for those gods where offerings are brought by their worshipers. The idols are contained in those houses and the offerings placed before them are untouched by the gods. By contrast, the Lord God is unable to be contained in a building. In fact, the universe cannot contain Him. And when God’s people bring offerings to Him, He receives them—as evidenced by the fire sent from heaven to consume the offerings when the tabernacle was inaugurated, when David brought his sacrifice at the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite, when the temple was dedicated and when Elijah made an offering before the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel. The temple Solomon built was a place of offering worship to God. We are God’s temple and we are to offer to God the sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving while confessing His great glory.
