God promised a great day of blessing. Righteousness would dawn. God and His people would be right. His people would be filled with joy so that they would leap like calves released from their stall. They've been healed from their sin and the relief is palpable. This is the Great Day of God! It is the day of salvation! All this has been signaled. John the Baptist was the Elijah to come that Malachi prophesied. Jesus identifies John as such. In so doing, Jesus identifies Himself as the Messiah who brings God's righteousness to a repentant Israel. We are joined to that Israel. For us, it is still the day of salvation. And the release from the guilt of our sin along with the healing from our depravity that that brings causes us to leap like calves.
