A well known Trinity Broadcasting Network pastor proclaimed many years ago that if "we," that is Christians, are to reach the world for Christ, then "we" need a "whole new concept of ministry." That view of ministry he referred to is the now ubiquitous "equipping ministry" philosophy which claims to be based upon Ephesians 4:12 and teaches that all Christians do the work of the ministry, while pastors have the small task of equipping the saints to do the work of the ministry. Sadly, this equipping ministry philosophy is not only believed and practiced by those who are within the Trinity Broadcasting Network fold of Christians, it is now taught in conservative Reformed seminaries and is supported in the comments of Reformed literature such as the Reformation Study Bible. This philosophy of ministry is based on a gross misunderstanding and mistranslation of Ephesians 4:12, is contrary to the rest of Scripture, and represents a serious departure from the classic, historical, confessionally Reformed and Presbyterian view of ministry and presents a great spiritual danger to the church. This sermon critiques the equipping ministry translation, provides argumentation for the correct and classical interpretation of Ephesians 4:12, and then sets forth a series of applications designed to recover the Biblical and Reformed and Presbyterian view of Christian ministry.
