Matthew is presenting the king who has come for sinners. He came into the world to bear our burden and to take to Himself our infirmity. He feels with us and for us and longs to relieve us of our suffering. He is a compassionate savior. This is what drives Jesus to the cross to bear our sins in His body on the tree. But sin causes all this world's terrible suffering and out of the Father's love the Son comes to remove the suffering due to us because of our sin. This is exemplified in His authoritative healing ministry. However, the permanent means for the alleviation of the suffering of sin in this world today is the vital preaching of the gospel. Along with His healing ministry, Jesus proclaimed the gospel of the kingdom. His ministry was principally a teaching ministry accompanied by signs and wonders. Jesus is moved with compassion for the crowds because they lack the shepherding of the gospel. Therefore, Matthew records Jesus urging the church of every age to pray to Him to send laborers for the harvest. He Lord of the harvest. Today He is actively gathering us that He might bring us to glory and rescue us from our suffering.
