Sermon Point: Deepen your faith and life in Christ!
The Gospel of John is a book of signs. The structure of the book tells us this. Chapter 1 is a prologue. Chapter 21 is an epilogue. Two large section lay in between. Chapters 2-11 present seven signs: turning water into wine, healing the nobleman's son, healing the paralytic at the pool of Bethesda, feeding the five thousand, walking on water, and healing the blind man by washing in the pool of Siloam. Signs three and six are Sabbath miracles. The seventh sign comes at the end of the first section, chapter 11. It is the raising of Lazarus.
Chapters 12-20 compose the second large section of John. Here we have passion week and the farewell discourses of Jesus. The resurrection of our Lord comes at the end of this second section. It is the great sign promised by Jesus (John 2:18-21).
These signs were recorded for the purpose of evoking faith leading to life in union with Christ. This is John's purpose in writing this gospel. You must root your faith and life in Christ and deepen your faith and life in Christ.
