In the last section of Second Samuel, the narrator turns away from chronological reporting to providing an overall perspective on the state of the kingdom of God in that day. The first and the last portions of chapters 21-24 indicate to us that the kingdom was hampered by failed leadership. Chapter 21 shows us that early on in David's reign, Israel experienced covenant curse in the form of famine sent by God for Saul's violation of the hundreds of years old covenant between Israel and Gibeon while chapter 24 records that Israel endured a deadly pestilence from God on account of David's sin in numbering the people. Both passages teach us that God's wrath had to be appeased through sacrifice. Specifically, chapter 21 manifests to us the fearfulness of divine wrath as seven of Saul's male descendants had to be put to death in order to turn away God's anger against His covenant people for failing to uphold His glorious name in reverence by maintaining their covenant word to Gibeon. This message ends with a proclamation of the bloody sacrifice of Jesus Christ as that propitiation of God's wrath and call for the sinner to seek refuge in the redeeming blood of Jesus from God's holy and severe wrath.
