Postmodernism may not be a familiar term with many, yet the effects of it infiltrate our society at every level. As individuals we will not be untouched by it. The address this blog seeks to highlight identifies the rise and progress of this way of thinking, showing the absurdity involved in it, its logical conclusion and how Christians need to confront it by declaring the absolute truth and authority of God's revelation, counteracting its influence in the family, church and civil realm.
Sermon Outline:
1. What is Postmodernism? The development of Modernism from Greek philosophy to the Enlightenment - human reason aided by scientific exploration the basis for absolute truth - Darwinism and the denial of a Creator God - World Wars and ruthless dictatorship - Postmodernism born out of disillusionment as Modernism holds no real answers. Postmodernism essentially scepticism, proposes the idea that truth cannot be known. The essential elements of Postmodernism: a) Relativism and pluralism b) Consumerism c) Political correctness
2. How Postmodernism affects our society. Some examples: in personal conversation; moral principles; political truthfulness. Postmodernism which at first affected the arts in breaking all the norms of beauty and order now further infiltrates many aspects of our society.
3. Our response to Postmodernism. It's not new but a way of justifying rebellion against God - it's an absurd contradiction and its response to moral questions and true/false religion wholly inconsistent - Christians must confront the absurdity of it on every hand as it makes inroads into the family, the state and the church.
