Love from the Heart When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment is He mentioned the command to love the Lord and quickly added a companion command to love your neighbor. While many think that Jesus also commands us to love ourselves, that is not what He said. Instead, He knows that we love ourselves too much and told us to love others as much as we love ourselves. If we do that we will not be clamoring to be ahead of others but we will be seeking their advancement. Are you able to let others be ahead of you? Jesus Christ, in coming to the earth to deliver us from our sin and misery, loved us to the extent we are to love others. He even did this when we were His enemies. His primary purpose in doing this was to redeem us, but in doing so He gave us an example of unfailing love to follow. Such love does not come naturally to us. We may be able to show it to some degree but our tendency is toward seeking our own advance¬ment, often to the detriment of others. But the love Jesus has shown us is the sort of love that God calls us to have. Though Christians do not always reflect this kind of love, they know what it is and where it comes from.
