Within evangelicalism there has been a blurring of the distinctives of Christian obedience, especially the biblical teaching of self-denial. This address defines it, shows the doctrinal and practical hindrances to it, suggests areas in which the Christian is called to engage in self-denial in our own day, and how we may cultivate a Christian attitude to the engagement - we need to see the evil of compromise which often involves giving way to expediency at the expense of principle, and devotion to Christ as the sweetest and best employment.
