This section of the scripture marks the end of the public ministry of Christ and His turning exclusively to the disciples to prepare them for His death and their ministry. The Lord's public ministry comes to a close with rejection from the people and the Lord hiding Himself away from those people. Those who rejected the Messiah were the same people to whom God had given the outward signs of the covenant. Despite seeing the outward teaching, signs and wonders of Christ, many rejected Him and refused to believe. God often lifts His hand of mercy from those who continue to reject His offered salvation. Nonetheless, there remains a free offer of the gospel even unto the reprobate.
