When David met Goliath, here was his confidence, 'The battle is the Lord's,' Because of this fundamental truth, he could add, 'and He will give you into our hand.' When we presume that God should take up our battles, we may have no cause to be certain of the outcome. Our battles may not be the Lord's. They may be struggles of our own making, out of our own imagination, out of our own agenda, but when we join into the Lord's battle, the outcome is never uncertain. Will God get glory to Himself? Will God save His people? Will God do as He's promised? None of these are in doubt however the circumstances may appear. This is the struggle of our faith and the subduing of our wills. David's chief concern was the honor of the name Yahweh. He was the champion of Israel annointed to be the future king. In that sense, he was the champion of the armies of the Lord. Of course, he was but a type of the future and permanent champion for the people of God. There had to be another who could subdue us and perfectly well conquer all our and His enemies: Jesus Christ. He has delivered us from the foe and, as the Shepherd of Israel, He leads us into His inheritance. |
