“Samson: A Shadow of the Savior” Judges 13:1-25; 16:1-31
Introduction—Samson wasn’t just saved by Christ but he saved like Christ. He was a sinning saint and a shadow of the true Savior, Jesus Christ.
I. His Birth Narrative (Judges 13:1-14; Matt. 1:18-23) At the advent of Christ, the proclamation of the angel was: ‘For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord’ (Luke 2:11). Samson was a type of Christ in this regard. At his birth a savior was born. Such is the keynote of chapter 13. As soon as Manoah’s wife is told she will bear a son, she hears of his mission: ‘And he will begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines’ (v. 5). This text is the hermeneutical key that must go before us as we work through the Samson narrative.—Dale Ralph Davies

III. A Judge (Judges 15:18-19; Matt. 3:13-18)

• Was anointed with the Spirit above measure (13:25; 14:6,19; 15:14; John 3:34)
• Was mocked & insulted (16:23-25; Matt. 27:27-44) • Had a resurrection-like experience (15:18-19) • By his death, he brought salvation (16:28-30)
