Idea: God has promised to forgive your sins through the propitiation of Jesus Christ, therefore be holy.
Intro: John has used very clear language to describe the incredible gift of forgiveness. Unfortunately, some take John's teaching about sin and forgiveness and reach the conclusion that John somehow endorses sin. If it is true that Jesus forgives all my sin, why try to stop sinning? John anticipates this conclusion and instead calls you to holiness. “I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.” Then, John bases this call to holiness on two important truths. God's promise to forgiven and the work of Jesus.
