In this section of the Letter to the Romans, several proverbs are given to support the genuineness of true Christian love (agape). These teachings are rooted in the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ and His works for His people. The love of Christ compels His people to abhor that which is evil and cleave to that which is good.
The character of love for the body of believers should be that of a family with brotherly affection. Brotherly love is not transient but vital to life showing and showing-forth great esteem and value for those in the faith. Service for the lord aught to be characterized by zealousness. Loving zealous service is contagious; it is characterized by hopeful anticipation of the Lord's promises and patience in times of tribulation. The Lord's people are to be further characterized by continuous devoted prayer, and they are to be generous in contributing to the physical needs of the brethren and regularly showing hospitality. The saints are called to a blessing, to live in harmony, and freely associate with both the high and humble in the church.
As the Lord's people show forth the fruits of righteousness, they show the Lord to many. All within the body of Christ are to ask the Lord to expose their short comings that they may grow in maturity and mutual edification to the church.
