In many parts of the world the firstborn was given special responsibilities and privileges. As a result there were various sibling rivalries in which a younger son would challenge the firstborn. The best known case is that of Jacob and Esau. But others could be cited from Scripture as well. God declared that Israel was his firstborn and challenged Pharaoh to let His firstborn go to worship Him or God would destroy Pharaoh’s firstborn. Pharaoh refused and God destroyed the firstborn of Egypt. We who belong to Christ are God’s firstborn with great privileges but also responsibilities. We must not abdicate those duties.
