The situation in our text reminds us of the runaway train chugging down the track toward a stalled car at a train crossing; from all appearances, it looks like things will end in disaster. For a year and a half David has been living the "good life" in Philistia, and now his hosts want him to show his bona fidesby taking part in a military attack Israel. It looks like David's foolish decisions have put him in a box as he marches out with the Philistines to fight God's covenant people. Just as everything looks like it would end in disaster for David, the Lord delivers him from his own folly by prevailing upon the hearts of the Philistine generals, who remember that past experiences using Hebrew auxiliary troops ended badly (14:21), and therefore they send David home to Ziklag with the prospects of his future kingship in Israel still intact. The Lord's deliverances cause unceasing wonder!
