Christ is now also the mediator of a better covenant established upon better promises.
1. The old and new covenants are the two outward forms of the covenant of grace. - Some incorrect views of this passage. - The real contrast is between what the new administration of the covenant accomplished compared with the old.
2. The anticipated superiority of the new covenant v7,8. Scripture had already spoken of a coming change - it ought to have been no surprise to the Hebrews.
3. The better promises of the new covenant v6b. The apostle is contrasting what the OT ceremonies promised and what Christ's blood shedding actually procured.
4. The greater effectiveness in the new covenant v9-13. Characterised by a greater outpouring of the Spirit and greater purity in the church - the 'all' as more fully relating to the grafting of Israel back 'into their own olive tree'. Rom 11:25-27, this ingathering of Israel and the conversion of the Gentiles is part of the general effectiveness of the NT administration.
- Do we bear the marks of God's saving operations in having his law written upon our hearts?
